Nearly all organizations are networked in one way or another and they’ll need a dedicated high-speed connection that multiple users can share. Quality of service is at least as important as speed. Since cable and ADSL are “best effort” services, meaning there’s no guarantee they’ll actually work when you need them, businesses that rely heavily on the internet should consider a Symmetrical DSL (SDSL) or T1 connection, where each come with performance and uptime guarantees.
Rural providers should probably consider IDSL, wireless or a satellite service.
If you don’t need the full speed of a T1, there are fractional T1 services, which are a fraction of the cost of full T1 services as well. Also, bundling phone and fax with your T1 service will result in a better value than using discrete communication providers, conversely, if your data needs exceed the lighting speed of a single T1, there are “bonded”T1 services that can double or triple your bandwidth and amount of data you can process.
